Mauthausen Concentration Camp

Mauthausen is a town in Austria located very close to the city of Linz where Hitler was raised for pretty much all of his adolescent years. This was the main camp in the country from which prisoners were transported to other satellite camps within the country. The main industry was quarry work which produce materials for the war.

Westerbork Transit Camp

Westerbork is located in the north eastern part of Holland about 30 min away from a town called Assen. I stayed in Assen when I went to visit the transit camp. Not all camps were concentration camps where people were put to death. This particular one was considered a transit camp first, then a detention camp. As far as I could find, none of the people that were transported to Westerbork stayed very long. Westerbork was just the starting point that led prisoners/detainees to other camps such as Auschwitz, Bergen-Belsen, Dachau, Theresien etc.

Dachau Concentration Camp

Dachau was the first of it’s kind in Germany. Initially in 1933, it was built to hold political prisoners. Like most concentration camps, Dachau KZ (Konzentrationslager), and it’s town share the same name. The camp and town are located a little northwest of the city of Munich (Muenchen). The Reich’s intentions were to begin with political prisoners, then move on to hold Jews, criminals, foreign nationals (POWs).
